MANILA - At P1.56 billion, the Makati City Hall Parking Building could easily be the most expensive parking building in the Philippines.
Former Makati barangay chairmen Renato Bondal and Nicholas Enciso insist the building is grossly overpriced.
The two have filed a plunder complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman against Vice-President Jejomar Binay, the Vice-President's son, Makati Mayor Junjun Binay and several others.
But Mayor Binay clarified the building in question is an extension of City Hall and not merely a parking complex.
The 11-storey Makati City Hall Building II has five parking levels and six office floors.
To decongest the Main City Hall, business licensing offices, the Makati Action Center and many others now hold office here.
Vice-President Binay said the building is quite expensive but not overpriced..
The building also has a landscaped roofdeck and an atrium.
It uses energy-saving LED lighting as well as glass walls and panels.
The Binays insist this allegation, like all other other allegations against their family, is politically motivated.
Bondal ran for mayor and lost against Junjun in 2013.
Bondal, however, noted: "Hindi kasalanan matalo sa pulitika. Kasalanan ang magnakaw."
The Vice-President believes the complaint is more than just local politics.
He said the plunder complaint is being backed by a group of lawyers connected to a national figure whom he refused to name.
Whatever the reason, the Ombudsman is now left to decide whether or not the complaint deserves to go to court.
