MANILA - The Department of Health (DOH) is set to choose 100 babies who will be part of the '100th Millionth Symbolic Babies' as the country's population reaches 100 million on Sunday.
According to the National Statistics Office (NSO), three babies are born every minute in the Philippines.
Following this trend, the population is expected to hit 100 million on Sunday, July 27, at 12:06 in the morning.
To celebrate this achievement, the DOH will be choosing 100 babies born through normal delivery on this date and time.
They will be part of the so-called "symbolic babies" and their families will received a starter kit worth P5,000.
"Siyempre celebration din 'yun, marking [ang] paglabas ng baby, na ito will provide new hope as we face new challenges," said Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy, DOH spokesperson.
It will also be a reminder of the new challenges the government faces as the population increases.
"Habang lumalawak ang populasyon, mas nagiging problema ang edukasyon, nutrisyon, so itong mga ito, na-address dapat," Lee Suy added.
At present, the DOH, through the Commission on Population (POPCOM) continues to educate couples on proper family planning methods. -- report from Carolyn Bonquin, ABS-CBN News
