MANILA, Philippines - Former Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral has renewed calls for the passage of the Reproductive Health Bill following last week's celebration of World Population Day.
Cabral, now a senior programme adviser of the United Nations Population Fund, said about 6 million Filipino women of reproductive age need access to RH services.
She said the lack of an RH law in the country is a major stumbling block to provide services such as family planning.
She said other Asian countries are making more progress compared to the Philippines.
"We are one of the few that are going to miss our mark as far as the millennium development goal number 5, which is universal access to reproductive health and improvement of maternal health, is concerned. Even Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, they are all on their way to achieving their milleniunm development goal," she said.
