MANILA - The Ombudsman is asking the Sandiganbayan to suspend Senator Juan Ponce Enrile from office in relation to the plunder case he is facing over the pork barrel scam.

The prosecution panel filed before the anti-graft court's Third Division a motion to suspend pendente lite or pending trial against Enrile, citing the plunder law.

The panel said the law states that an official accused of plunder should be suspended to prevent him from intimidating witnesses or tampering with the evidence.

Sandiganbayan Third Division clerk of court Atty. Dennis Pulma said the motion will be heard on Friday at 8:30 a.m.

Enrile, who is accused of amassing P172 million in pork barrel kickbacks, is facing one count of plunder and 15 counts of graft.

The prosecution earlier also filed suspension cases against Senator Jinggoy Estrada, Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr., and Atty. Richard Cambe.

They are also facing plunder and graft charges before the Sandiganbayan over the multibillion-peso pork barrel anomaly. -- Reports from Adrian Ayalin, ABS-CBN News; Johnson Manabat, dzMM
