MANILA, Philippines - As ordered by President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, newly-appointed Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo aims to clamp down on big-time jueteng operators.
Kaya Natin! convenor Harvey Keh said Robredo aims to end the illegal numbers game by going after the so-called “big fishes.”
Kaya Natin! is a movement that aims for genuine change and ethical leadership. Robredo is one of its co-founders.
He said the former Naga City mayor will soon discuss with the Philippine National Police the Department of Interior and Government’s (DILG) strategies on how to resolve the issue, including other high-profile cases such as media killings and private armies.
Prior to Robredo’s selection, Aquino concurrently held the DILG portfolio.
The appointment of the interior and local government secretary became controversial after Vice President Jejomar Binay had said he would like to be of service to the government by heading the DILG.
Keh said Robredo is Aquino’s one and only choice for the post. Robredo has proven to be a good leader, as can be gleaned from his numerous awards as Naga City mayor, he added.
Aquino did not immediately announce the appointment because he was also mulling placing Robredo in the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, Keh said.
He said Robredo is willing to communicate with Binay in order to source suggestions for the betterment of the local government units.
Robredo will report to work on Tuesday.
