Gigi Reyes files MR, wants to be brought to Crame

MANILA (6TH UPDATE) - Lawyer Gigi Reyes, one of the accused in the multibillion-peso pork barrel scam, was rushed to a hospital in Taguig after suffering an anxiety attack while detained at Camp Bagong Diwa.

Director Rodencio Sta. Lucia of Taguig Pateros District Hospital said Reyes became hysterical and her blood pressure shot up, prompting her relatives to bring her to hospital at around 1 a.m. Thursday.

Her transfer came just two hours after Reyes was detained at the Bicutan jail on plunder and graft charges.

"Kinakabahan. Naninigas ang extremities ng kanyang kamay at paa at may suspetsa ang relatives na nag si-seizures daw si Atty. Reyes during that time so she was rushed to the emergency room. According to our physician, our diagnosis is more on anxiety disorder and hypertensive," he told reporters.

"If the blood pressure is high, it is possible to trigger any cardiovascular attack sa puso or mas grabe na sakit," he added.

Sta. Lucia said Reyes was diagnosed to have neurocirculatory asthenia and hypertension. Doctors are also monitoring the lawyer's vital signs after learning that Reyes has a history of dyspepsia, coronary artery disease, Bell's palsy and seizure attack.

He said Reyes also revealed that she has a history of lacunar infarct or silent strokes.

"Naikwento niya sa akin na she was under treatment because of her seizure disorder. Nagkaroon siya ng Bell's palsy at coronary artery disease. Yun ang iniingatan namin. Baka yun ang mag-trigger o ma exacerbate yung problema, yung kanyang medical condition," he said.

"Atty. Reyes also told me she had a previous lacunar infarct. May maliliit na infarction or parang sa brain niya she had mini strokes before. Pag ganun I don't know if she has completely recovered. We just base our evaluation on the clinical findings namin sa kanya," he added.

He said Reyes is now more calm. "Sa ngayon, hindi na po siya umiiyak," he said.

He said the lawyer was given intravenous fluids because she has refused to eat or drink since last night.

"If she wants to, she can eat. I think she did not eat or drink since last night, that is why she was dehydrated when brought to the emergency room. That is why they put an IV on her," he said.

Sta. Lucia said the hospital is still waiting for Reyes' bloodwork and that her vital signs are being monitored.

Reyes is the former chief of staff of Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile. Both are accused of pocketing millions of pesos in pork barrel kickbacks.

Meanwhile, Reyes' lawyers filed a motion for reconsideration before the Sandiganbayan Third Division, asking that Reyes be transferred to the Philippine National Police Custodial Center at Camp Crame.

Reyes was brought to Camp Bagong Diwa Wednesday night after the Sandiganbayan denied her request to be transferred to the PNP Custodial Center where her co-accused in the pork barrel scam plunder case are detained.

She arrived at Camp Bagong Diwa at 11:15 p.m. where her fingerprints and mug shots were taken.

She was also given a yellow t-shirt with the words "BJMP detainee" printed on the back.

Police earlier said Reyes will be detained temporarily in an isolation room, measuring 1.5 by 6 meters, which is good for four inmates.

The lawyer will be sharing the cell with a pregnant inmate.

Inspector Aris Villaester, BJMP spokesperson, said Reyes will be staying in the room for a week as part of standard operating procedure before she is moved to a regular cell with the other Camp Bagong Diwa inmates.

"Rinequest niya lang po ay higaan lang. Yung kumot tsaka unan. Katulad din ng ordinaryong kulungan, may rehas, may tamang higaan at sapat lang po ang area na yun para sa apat na tao," he said.

Villaester said only relatives, counsel and close friends will be allowed to visit Reyes but only after receiving clearance.

Visiting hours at Camp Bagong Diwa are from Tuesday to Fridays, 1-5 pm; Saturdays to Sundays, 9 am-5 pm.

Malacanang has left it to the PNP to announce if Reyes can be accommodated at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said law enforcers are prepared to implement whatever will be the order of the court.

"So we will always defer to the discretion of the Sandiganbayan justices as how to or where to detain Ms. Gigi Reyes," he said.

As for space for Reyes, he said: "That I would have to inquire from the PNP Custodial Center. I understand she requested to be detained [there]. So we will have to ask [PNP spokesman Reuben Theodore] Sindac. I guess that will be subject also to availability, but again, we will have to defer to RT Sindac, the spokesperson for the PNP. They would be in a better position to respond to that in terms of space, in terms of quarters available."

The spokesman assured the public that government is concerned about the health of the detainees.

"It is in the interest of the state to ensure the well-being of its respondents, the detained persons. We do not refer only to one particular individual. So if there is a concern, for instance in this particular case, my understanding is that her asthma was aggravated. So she asked to be rushed to the hospital."
