MANILA -- Former Senator Rene Saguisag said the Senate during his time appeared to have passed the test, especially when compared to the Senate of today.
Asked to compare the Senate during his time there and the Senate of today, Saguisag told radio dzMM on Saturday: “When I went there, I felt insecure next to the likes of Senator [Salvador Laurel], but looking at those who followed us, baka pwede na.”
He explained that the two-party system during his time filtered those who can and cannot run for Congress. “You have to go through a lot before you can join the 8-person ticket,” he said.
He lamented that now, even those without the knowledge of serving the people can already join the system. “Kasama lang yatang pinabili ng suka, kasama na,” he said.
Saguisag also took a swipe at the plans of boxing champ and Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao to run for the upper chamber.
“My friend [Vice President Jejomar Binay] reportedly wants [Pacquiao] as senator. Dios mio… a pretender as congressman, a pretender as senator. This is not to underrate Manny, but he has to give up some things and prepare [if he wants to become a politician],” he said.
But at the same time, he hopes that someone like Senator Grace Poe will emerge in the next senatorial elections.
