MANILA – Lawyer Jessica "Gigi" Reyes, the former chief of staff of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, spent the weekend in a small cell at the Sandiganbayan.
Reyes, who is also facing plunder charges in connection with the pork barrel scam, surrendered to the Sandiganbayan after the anti-graft court's Third Division ordered her arrest on Friday.
The Sandiganbayan released photos of Reyes' detention cell, which is around 5 x 4.7 meters in size.
It is furnished with a cubicle comfort room, a sink, two single beds and a stand fan, which replaced a defective ceiling fan.
The court initially ordered Reyes to be transferred in the Quezon City Jail, but only after an assurance from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) that she will be secured.
However, the BJMP said on Sunday that Enrile’s former aide cannot be transferred to the Quezon City Jail because aside from her being high-profile and a high-risk inmate, the jail has already exceeded capacity.
The Sandiganbayan will discuss where to transfer Reyes on Monday.
"Ayon sa report, hindi advisable na doon si Atty. Reyes. Tingnan natin kung ano ang magiging action ng court," said Atty. Dennis Pluma of the Sandiganbayan's Third Division.
Pluma said Reyes cannot stay longer at the Sandiganbayan because its detention facility is just for temporary stays.
"Hindi naman talaga trabaho ng korte yun. Kung meron man kaming detention facility, 'yun ay temporary lang," he said. -- with a report from Jenny Reyes, ABS-CBN News
