MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines does not intend to put up structures to guard against incursions in Benham Rise.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the Philippine Coast Guard and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is monitoring the area. He said it is normal practice that arrests would be made and charges would be filed against foreign poachers.

He said that the country intends to maximize the development and resources in the area.
“We are not intending to put any structures… We have Coast Guard and BFAR vessels plying. In fact, we have improved the capability of Coast Guard that’s why wala kaming intention to put up structures. But it’s being monitored. We have BFAR vessels, Coast Guard vessels doon. This is primarily simply a police action lang so there’s no intention to do that,” Lacierda said.
Meantime, Lacierda clarified that there were no Chinese nor Taiwanese fishers poaching in Benham Rise.
