MANILA, Philippines - The chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) wants Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago to decide quickly if and when she will quit her post, so the poll body can include her seat in the 2013 mid-term elections.
Chairman Sixto Brillantes said he hopes Santiago will decide before the reconfiguration of the PCOS machines in January 2013.
He said Comelec needs time to reconfigure the machines to allow them to read a 13th senator when votes are counted.
"Ayaw pa sumagot. She told press already kakausapin niya ako. Di niya alam kailan siya magresign. She should resign before October 5 so we will know if shade 13 or 12."
Brillantes said that should Santiago resign, the Senate will pass a resolution authorizing special elections for the remainder of her term which runs till June 30, 2016.
The Comelec will accept certificates of candidacy from October 1 to 5.
Santiago is set to resign as she is poised to take her seat in the International Criminal Court.
