MANILA - Malacañang said it is praying for the recovery of Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, who announced on Wednesday that she has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
"We are one with the people in praying for the health and recovery of Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago. Despite her condition, she has devoted herself to the performance of her duties as a legislator and public servant," Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday morning, Santiago said the diagnosis came last week.
She said her doctors have no idea what caused the cancer since she does not smoke nor drink.
"I don't even commit adultery. I only tell lies to my husband," she said.
But the feisty senator said she is optimistic that she can return to work after 6 weeks, adding that she is even "excited" she has cancer.
"I'm very excited. I'm not kidding. I said, 'Yes! I got cancer!' Because now, I'm entering another dimension of my life. That has always been my attitude," Santiago said.
"I don't know what the reaction of my enemies are. Maybe they'll be happy because, on one hand, I might die and they could get rid of me. But on the other hand, I might survive and I will get rid of them," she added. -- With report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
