MANILA - Vice President Jejomar Binay said the public should rally behind President Benigno Aquino III amid calls for his impeachment.
"President Aquino is our leader duly elected by our people. He has the people's mandate and we should support him. This is why talks of impeaching President Aquino is both unproductive and divisive,” Binay said.
This comes on the heels of the Supreme Court decision that declared acts under the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) as unconstitutional. To summarize, the high court said the executive can only use and transfer money to other agencies if this is in the form of savings and is appropriated under the General Appropriations Act.
Binay called for sobriety amid speculations on the liabilities of the government officials.
"I would instead encourage all parties to set aside partisan political acts and just accept and respect the ruling of the SC. As to the accountabilities of other government officials, we should let the effects of the SC decision take its course. As of now none of us has read the decision in its entirety so any discussion accountabilities at this point on is purely speculative," he said.
He urged everyone "to work together and advance the welfare of our people, which should be our overriding goal."
