MANILA, Philippines - Lawyer Katrina Legarda and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima are among those who received the most number of nominations for the position of Chief Justice, a member of the Judicial and Bar Council said Monday.
Lawyer Jose Mejia, JBC regular member of the academe, said Legarda received 9 nominations while de Lima received 6. Both have accepted their nominations.
"One of those who had the most number of nominations is Atty. Katrina Legarda. As far as I can remember, she has 9 nominations while Secretary de Lima, the last time I heard, she has 6 nominations. But I will have to verify," he told ANC.
The JBC has until Tuesday midnight to receive nominations for the Chief Justice post. Mejia said at least 13-14 nominees have accepted their nomiantions while 13 have declined.
He also said the JBC has yet to receive letters from acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio and De Lima formally accepting their nominations.
Mejia said the disbarment case against de Lima is not a permanent disqualification if the case is dismissed during the JBC process.
"If in the process of the interview and the consideration of the applicants, that case was dismissed, then that will cure the defect. That has happened with other candidates in the past," he said.
The JBC is expected to come up with a short list of candidates for the Chief Justice position by July 30
The President has until August 27 to choose a new Chief Justice from the JBC shortlist.
