MANILA - Senate President Franklin Drilon said the suspension of senators embroiled in the pork scam controversy would not be automatic.

Drilon said the Ombudsman must first seek their preventive suspension and let the Sandiganbayan decide on the matter. Only then will the Senate implement the order.

Drilon said Senator Sonny Angara may take over the role of Senator Jinggoy Estrada as chairman of the Senate committee on labor, employment and human resources.

"Pag nasampahan at pag nagfile ang Ombudsman for preventive suspension, automatic ang supension at eto'y gagalangin ng Senado," he said.

Senators Estrada, Juan Ponce Enrile and Bong Revilla are facing graft and plunder charges before the Sandiganbayan for allegedly funneling millions of pesos of their priority development assistance funds to bogus NGOs of Janet Lim Napoles.

Revilla and Estrada are currently detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center after separate anti-graft court divisions ordered their arrest.
