Groups push ‘people’s initiative’

MANILA - Several church groups have set a National Day of Prayer and Vigilance against the pork barrel scam on June 25, Wednesday.

CBCP News quoted Church People’s Alliance Against Pork Barrel (CPAPB) spokesman Nardy Sabino as saying, “We call on the faithful to gather in Plaza Miranda on June 25 at 4:30 p.m. Let us pray and add our voice [to] the righteous clamor of the people to abolish pork.”

Sabino asked the people to offer an evening mass, prayer, or any symbolic gesture tomorrow.

He said the day of prayer will set the stage for an education-signature campaign to the bill on the "People’s Initiative to Abolish the Pork."

"This [people’s initiative] will give voice to the otherwise voiceless people and will enable them to have a stronger impact on the legal procedures, especially that Congress and Senate members have been involved in corruption,” Sabino explained.

A People’s Congress has also been set on August.

“While we laud the declaration of the Supreme Court on the Priority Development Assistance Fund [PDAF] as unconstitutional, we remain vigilant that the same ruling be declared over the disbursement acceleration program (DAP), touted as the ‘president’s pork’,” said Sabino.

The CPAPB called on the faithful not to be idle or numb.

“We are witnesses to the people’s will for change that has evolved into various forms of actions. And we pursue this call for justice until all guilty are made accountable,” he said.
