MANILA, Philippines – It’s Magsaysay vs Magsaysay in the 2013 Senate race after Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay confirmed that relative and former Senator Ramon 'Jun' Magsaysay Jr. is being persuaded by the Liberal Party (LP) to run in next year’s senatorial elections.
Jun Magsaysay is the 1st cousin of Vic Magsaysay, who is the father-in-law of the Zambales congresswoman.
The Zambales lawmaker said that while the elder Magsaysay has yet to make up his mind, she confirmed “it is the LP who is pushing him to run for the Senate.”
“Hindi pa naman ho sumasagot si Jun Magsaysay,” he said.
The younger Magsaysay said this will not be the first time that members of their clan will vie for the same post. In the 1992 vice-presidential elections, Jun Magsaysay filed and campaigned for vice president even after Vic Magsaysay already filed and campaigned for the same post.
“Pareho sila talo. We both know what will happen in case we both run,” she said.
She said she remains unfazed by the looming showdown, pointing out that it will be her performance that will make the difference.
“I’m a Magsaysay by choice. It’s not the family name. It’s how I performed as a congresswoman. It’s your track record. Di pa naman tapos. Intriga lang yan,” she said.
Admin threatened by Mitos?
The lawmaker said the administration party may have tapped the older Magsaysay because they feel threatened by her senatorial bid.
“Bottomline: kung non-entity si Mitos Magsaysay, why do they have to take all that pain to convince him to run?” she asked.
Magsaysay said she expects to hear more from her relative during the Magsaysay clan reunion on July 9, 2012.
The congresswoman was at the Serye Media Forum in Quezon City where Presidential Adviser Neric Acosta was also a guest.
Acosta, who was an LP senatorial candidate in 2010, has reservations about running for the same post again in 2013. He said he has pending work in the environment sector.
