MANILA, Philippines – The Palace is hoping that the National Democratic Front (NDF) will agree to observing a ceasefire to de-escalate violence between government forces and the New People’s Army.
"We certainly hope that the other side as well would… seriously consider the ceasefire as a mechanism to advance peace," Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.
This, as it welcomed the news that the communist guerillas have agreed to going back to the peace talks.
"We certainly welcome the decision of both parties, the decision of the NDF to resume talks with the government," Lacierda said.
"The resumption of talks was brokered by third parties and we certainly thank the third parties for doing so. That's a step in the right direction,” he said.
"The devil is in the details. We hope that something can be ironed out and we would leave that with the negotiators and also with the NDF negotiators for them to thresh out whatever obstacles there are,” he added.
