MANILA, Philippines - No lady or Supreme Court outsider has ever been appointed Chief Justice.
According to Senator Francis Pangilinan, a former representative of the Senate to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), tradition has always given way to associate justices when time calls for a new Chief Justice.
"Parehong wala, walang outsider or babae sa history natin na napasok sa Chief Justice," he said.
He believes that time now calls for an out-of-the-box appointment to the Supreme Court.
"The President himself is non-traditional, and he was launched to the position in a non-traditional manner," said Pangilinan.
Meanwhile, reporters caught up with former Solicitor General Frank Chavez who has been nominated to replace former Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Chavez refused to make any comment, until he has seen the nomination papers.
"Marami nang nagtetext sa akin, di ko pa naman nakita yung nomination. But it's humbling and elating to know na meron pa palang mga naniniwala na qualified ako to be Chief Justice," said Chavez.
