MANILA - Malacañang on Friday assured the public that President Benigno Aquino III is healthy enough to finish his term.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Aquino consults his personal physicians on a regular basis.
"I was told by one of them that: 'Yes, he maintains, generally, in good health,'" she said.
"And I do know that, yes, whenever merong nararamdaman ang Pangulo na siguro 'pag may sipon, may kaunting ano sa nararamdaman, he mentions sometimes that he tends to have some stomach pains, nagkokonsulta po 'yan agad doon sa kanyang physician," she added.
Valte assured that the President is healthy enough to finish his term.
"I don't have a crystal ball but, certainly, he will... You know, he runs around to all of these engagements, all of these meetings and I think yes, he is in good health enough to do that," she said.
During his Independence Day address in Naga City, Aquino's speech was interrupted a few times by coughing fits.
The Chief Executive is a known smoker and also has allergies to pollen among other things.
"I know that some circumstances tend to -- and he has mentioned this to us also -- aggravate his allergies sometimes. So the staff around him do tend to make it a note to make sure that sometimes when the President is visiting an area outside of the Palace...na hindi naman matri-trigger iyong allergies ng Pangulo. But, you know, that cannot happen all the time," Valte said.
She maintained that the public will be informed if the President is sick. "Pag nagkakasakit naman ang Pangulo sinasabi naman natin like if he has to take a day off because he has flu, we do inform the public because we're aware that it's one of the things that we have to do."
Aquino steps down on June 30, 2016.
