MANILA, Philippines – Vice-President Jejomar Binay on Tuesday said there is no internal rift in the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) despite a brewing conflict between 2 of its senatorial candidates.
Binay, the founding chairman of UNA, said leaders of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) and the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) talked about Sen. Koko Pimentel's petition to reject his erstwhile rival, Juan Miguel Zubiri, as an UNA candidate.
He said UNA leaders agreed to retain Zubiri but did not discuss how the endorsement will affect Pimentel’s standing in the party.
Pimentel, president of PDP-Laban, earlier threatened to leave the coalition if Binay decides to keep Zubiri in the senatorial ticket in 2013. Binay said that the decision still lies with Pimentel.
Asked if there is trouble in UNA, the Vice-President said: “Gumugulo lang ang UNA dahil sa dami ng gustong kumandidato.”
Binay led the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony during the 114th Independence Day festivities in Rizal Park Tuesday.
He was joined by Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim. Report by Jeff Canoy, ABS-CBN News
