 Two investigative series written by Newsbreak for abs-cbnNews.com last year are among the eight finalists in the 2009 Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Excellence in Journalism (JVOAEJ), the most prestigious journalism awards in the country.

“A policy of betrayal” by Miriam Grace A. Go was a three-part series on how President Arroyo administration, aided by her allies in the legislature, compromised the country’s territorial interests in the name of oil exploration. (Click here to read Part 1 , Part 2 , Part 3 )

In “The many faces of bribery,” another three-part series, Aries Rufo discussed the breakdown of ethics at the Court of Appeals and raised questions on the integrity of the justices following allegations of bribery to decide in favor of certain parties in the Meralco-GSIS case. (Click here to read Part 1 , Part 2 , and Part 3 )

Go’s and Rufo’s series were published in the Philippine Star, a print partner of Newsbreak and ABS-CBN, in March and September 2008, respectively.

The other JVOAEJ finalists are:
 

  • “‘Political killings not official but an unintended policy’” by Nikko Dizon, Jocelyn R. Uy, and Leila B. Salaverria if the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
  • “US subprime crisis: Why we should worry” by Des Ferriols of the Philippine Star.
  • “Aid inflow sparks scandals for GMA, debt woes for RP” by Roel Landingin of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.
  • “Squatters and the city” by Cherry Ann T. Lim and Rene H. Martel of Sun.Star Cebu.
  • “Quedancor swine program another fertilizer scam” by VERA Files.
  • “Less than 10 people in plot; 5 core, 5 others ‘in the know’” by Fe Zamora of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The JVOAEJ this year scanned investigative and explanatory reports on human rights, the environment, governance and corruption, and the economic and financial crisis that were published in 2008.

On June 25, the winners will be known in ceremonies at the SGV Hall, 3/F AIM Conference Center Manila, Benavidez cor. Trasierra Streets, Legaspi Village, Makati City.

The awards will be preceded at 9:30 a.m. by the Jaime V. Ongpin seminar, which will feature a panel discussion on what went into the research and writing of the chosen articles.

The first JVOAEJ were given in 1990 to honor the late Jaime V. Ongpin, who was secretary of finance during the Aquino administration. A press freedom advocate, Ongpin was involved in the struggle against the Marcos dictatorship and was instrumental in harnessing public support for the restoration of democracy in the Philippines.
