MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang on Thursday said it respects the decision of the Ombudsman to dismiss a graft and bribery case against former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
“The Arroyo camp can take comfort from the fact that by the dismissal of that case against Mrs. Arroyo, it clearly shows we are not using the Office of the Ombudsman as a tool for political harassment. Far from it," Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.
He added: "In fact, the Ombudsman has clearly shown her independence by dismissing this case based on her independent assessment and appreciation of the documents and evidence filed in that particular case."
Meantime, Lacierda believes the electoral sabotage case against Mrs. Arroyo is not "crumbling."
"I don’t think it is crumbling. Comelec has the mandate to make sure that it successfully prosecutes the case against whoever it accuses," he said.
