Requires applicants, nominees to sign waiver on foreign currency accounts

MANILA, Philippines - The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has formally announced the opening of the application or nomination period for the position of Chief Justice.

Applicants and nominees have until June 18, Monday, to submit their applications or recommendations to the JBC Secretariat, 2nd floor, Supreme Court Centennial Building, Padre Faura St., Manila.

Six copies of accomplished Personal Data Sheet, downloadable from the JBC website: http://jbc.judiciary.gov.ph, are also required.

Aside from these usual documentary requirements, the following documents are also required:

  • Sworn Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Networth (SALN);
  • for those in the government: all previous SALNs (up to 31 December 2011);
  • for those from the private sector: SALN as of 31 December 2011; and,
  • waiver in favor of the JBC of the confidentiality of local and foreign currency under the Bank Secrecy Law and Foreign Currency Deposit Act (FCDA).

It may be recalled that former Chief Justice Renato Corona is the first public official to sign a waiver on his foreign currency accounts, in the spirit of transparency and accountability.

Corona signed the waiver, in open court, during his recently concluded impeachment trial, and challenged his accusers and staunch critic Senator-judge Franklin Drilon, to do the same.

Calls for public officials, including Pres. Aquino, to sign the waiver were made following Corona's lead.

So far, only a handful of senators and congressmen have heeded the call.

For more information or queries on the search for the next Chief Justice, applicants may call tel. no. 552-9512, fax at 552-9598, or email the JBC at [email protected]; [email protected].
