MANILA - Social media users on Thursday welcomed the Ombudsman's decision to deny the bid of alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles to be made immune from charges filed against her.
In a letter dated June 4, 2014, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales denied Napoles' request for immunity because she failed to meet the qualifications to become a state witness.
The Ombudsman also denied the motions for reconsideration filed by Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla who are facing plunder charges in connection with the pork barrel scam.
Netizens said that the Ombudsman made the right decision and that it was long overdue.
Many hope that justice will be served. They include Facebook user Bing Bayani who said, "So be it, the due process and justice be served."
Meanwhile, Facebook user Raymond Bacalso Vallejos hopes that the Ombudsman’s decision was not only made for a show, saying "Tama lang ang Ombudsman. We want justice. Sana lang hindi ito ningas kugon lang. Baka pakitang tao lang ito then later on wala ring mangyayari. God forbid.
Netizens also said their trust in the justice system grew after the Ombudsman's decision.
However, netizens said the Ombudsman should also look at other government officials who might also be part of the pork barrel scam, especially those who are on the side of the President.
One social media user also tweeted that Napoles should still do her role as a truthful witness, even if the Ombudsman did not grant her request for immunity.
The Ombudsman will push through with the filing of plunder cases against Enrile, Estrada and Revilla for their alleged links to the Napoles scam.- report from Lord Bien Lelay
