MANILA - The matter of bail for detained former President and now Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is a matter best left to the Sandiganbayan, a Palace spokesman said Monday.
Mrs. Arroyo is detained on a plunder charge in connection with the alleged misuse of over half a billion in Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office funds.
Walden Bello of Akbayan was earlier quoted by a GMA-7 program as backing the bail petition of Mrs. Arroyo.
Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said he will ask Bello to discuss the matter with fellow Akbayan party-list lawmaker Barry Gutierrez.
"There is a legal point of view there that has to be decided legally by the judge. So it is beyond us to say or beyond us to determine whether [she] should not be granted bail or not. Ultimately, it will be the judge, the judiciary who will determine whether a bail should be granted or not," he said.
