MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – Former Chief Justice Renato Corona was discharged from the hospital on Saturday after being confined for more than a week.
Corona was accompanied by his family when he left the hospital at around 5:40 p.m., according to Ann dela Cruz, chief corporate communication of The Medical City.
They, however, did not pass through the main lobby but instead used the hospital basement exit to avoid members of the media.
Doctors said the former chief justice's health is getting better which prompted them to permit Corona from being discharged.
His lawyer Judd Roy said Corona is now feeling better. He added that Corona is ready to return to private life.
"I think it would be very beneficial even to the lawyers if he would take the time. He’s in very good spirits and he’s very rested,” said Roy.
Corona, a diabetic, was brought to the intensive care unit (ICU) of The Medical City in Pasig City after testifying in his impeachment trial last May 22.
He was confined for hypoglycemia and heart ailment.
Corona again appeared in the Senate last May 25 against the advice of his doctors after he had signed a medical waiver stating he is leaving the hospital on his own terms.
Corona was also advised by his doctors against watching the Senate's verdict issued on Tuesday.
He was found guilty of betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution for his failure to disclose his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth as required under the Constitution.
His lawyers said the former chief magistrate will no longer appeal the impeachment court’s decision. -- With a report from Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News
