President-elect Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President-elect Leni Robredo

MANILA - The camp of Vice President-elect Leni Robredo on Wednesday said she will perform her duties as vice president, with or without a Cabinet post.

Speaking to reporters, Robredo's spokesperson Georgina Hernandez said they understand why President-elect Rodrigo Duterte does not want to appoint her in his Cabinet.

She added that Robredo will do her best as vice president regardless of Duterte's decision.

Hernandez said Robredo is not saddened by the importance Duterte gives to his friendship with defeated vice presidential candidate Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.

"Hindi naman po ito dinadamdam ni Vice President-elect Robredo at tatanggapin niya kung anoman ang maging desisyon ni President-elect Duterte tungkol sa bagay na ito," she also said.

LET'S WAIT

For Hernandez, it is still to early to say that Robredo will play a small role in the Duterte administration, given that Robredo has yet to have a meeting with Duterte.

Hernandez said they are still trying to get an appointment with Duterte for the two sides to talk.

She also said they are still hoping that Robredo will be given an active role in the Duterte administration.

Hernandez, however, added that even if Robredo is not appointed to a Cabinet position, the vice president-elect can still serve the public even if her office will have limited funds.

NO OBLIGATION

Meanwhile, Senator Koko Pimentel, head of PDP-Laban, said Duterte is "under no obligation" to give a Cabinet position to Robredo.

Senator Sonny Angara, on the other hand, said in a statement that he is hopeful Duterte will eventually assign Robredo to a post.

While Angara said Duterte should be given time to do so, he also said that Duterte can even create a post for Robredo. - with reports from Adrian Ayalin and Jing Castañeda, ABS-CBN News
