MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang said President Aquino can recommend someone to become the next Chief Justice.
Nonetheless, it is still up to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) to screen and draw the list of candidates from which the President will choose the replacement for former Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Asked if the President can nominate someone to become chief justice, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said: "Ideally, yes because it's an open nomination process. So anybody can nominate. And in the same vein, anybody can make an opposition to the list of nominees.”
She said the process will go through public screening anyway. “May posting of the vacancy, opening of applications. Kapag nagkaroon na po ng nominees, the list will be posted publicly, and for anybody to pose an opposition, as well as to be present during the public interviews of the JBC,"
Asked if the President is open to appointing an outsider to become the next Chief Justice, Valte said: "That will depend on the shortlist to be transmitted."
The President previously said that he is open to appointing an outsider to become the next Chief Justice.
