MANILA, Philippines - Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile did not send the Senate doctor to examine Chief Justice Renato Corona to check on his medical condition, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada said Wednesday.
Speaking to ANC, Estrada said Enrile did not allow a Senate medical team to examine Corona because they would be bound by the findings of the doctors.
"The Senate President did not allow the Senate doctors to go to the Medical City. We will just get the word of the defense. We will be [bound] by the Senate doctors [if they had gone]," he said.
Estrada said the Senate wants to finish the trial before the end of the month. He said the senator-judges will have no choice but to wait for Corona to return to the Senate impeachment court on Friday to finish his testimony.
“I think Friday is reasonable enough e sabi naman ng doctor niya 48 hours so Friday yun…I am hoping for the sake of our people that he comes,” he said.
Lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas earlier informed the court that Corona will not be able to return to the impeachment court until Monday next week due to his illness. He said Corona’s doctors were monitoring the chief justice for 48 hours after assessing a near “heart attack” last night.
However, the Senate President gave Corona until Friday to return to the witness stand.
“This court will give you until Friday to cross your evidence, then we submit the case [for resolution]. On Monday, we schedule the oral arguments. It will depend on the court whether we submit our vote [after] or suspend to another day,” Enrile said.
Enrile set the oral arguments for both parties on Monday. Both will be given an hour each to present their case. This means the prosecution will no longer provide any rebuttal evidence.
