On the 40th day of the historic impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, many Filipinos were glued to the television, radio or Internet to watch or listen to what the head of the judiciary had to say in his defense.

After an almost 4-hour opening statement on his real properties and bank accounts, as well as the Basa-Guidote Enterprises Inc. intra-corporate dispute, Corona signed a waiver opening all his bank accounts on condition that all 188 congressmen who impeached him, plus Senator-judge Franklin Drilon, do the same.

Here are some highlights of Corona's appearance at the Senate, which ended with him leaving the session hall without permission, and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile ordering a lockdown of the Senate building to prevent the chief justice from leaving.
