MANILA - Supporters of alleged communist leader Andrea Rosal staged a picket at the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday morning, ahead of her 3-hour visit to the wake of her newborn daughter.
The small group of protesters from Karapatan-Southern Tagalog and the Free Andrea Movement appealed for justice for Rosal and for the death of her daughter.
They blame government for the death of baby Diona, citing inhumane detention conditions as the reason for the newborn's death.
Rosal, who faces trial for kidnapping with murder, was arrested last March.
She is the daughter of the late Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal, spokesman for the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).
While the Pasig Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 266 granted her plea to visit her daughter's wake, it did not allow her to attend the burial.
"It is a very heartless consideration for a mother grieving for her daughter, while in fact the court can grant Andrea's request to stay for the wake and to attend her daughter's funeral services.
"For the last time again, they are depriving Andrea of her right as a mother," Pastor Beth Tendero, spokesman of the Free Andrea Movement, said in a press statement.
Rosal is expected to pay her last respects to baby Diona at the Holy Infant Child Cathedral at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
