MANILA, Philippines - Vice-President Jejomar Binay on Monday shrugged off comments that he is helping build political dynasties by choosing allies who are relatives of current and former politicians.
He said there is no reason to disqualify people from running for public office just because they are related to other politicians.
"Why would you disqualify yung mga kamag-anak? Una, andun naman ang qualification para magtrabaho. Pangalawa ito naman ay pipiliin ng tao, so why are we going to prevent people from making a choice?" he said.
Binay has joined forces with former President Joseph Estrada and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile in the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) ahead of the 2013 midterm elections.
UNA is expected to field a complete senatorial slate that includes JV Ejercito, Koko Pimentel, Joey de Venecia, and Jack Enrile.
Binay said being a relative of a well-known politician does not ensure victory. "Marami namang natatalo.
He said UNA has only approved 5 candidates for senator so far.
Honasan," he said.
"Meron naman kaming tatanggapin in their individual capacity so we have more than 9 na pinagpipilian pero soon we will make the declaration kung sino pa po ang kasama sa aming ticket.
