BALIWAG, BULACAN - Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago amused the people of this town with her usual pick-up lines and satire, when she delivered Thursday her speech as Guest of Honor and Speaker at the 5th Commencement Exercises of Baliwag Polytechnic College.
"Cup noodles ka ba? Bakit? Kasi gusto kitang buhusan ng kumukulong tubig," said Santiago, which drew the laughter of the crowd of some 2,000 people who attended the ceremony.
She added: "Common sense nyo pa lang, IQ na ng mga kasama kong senador."
The senator had a prepared speech but opted to go extemporaneous in delivering her message.
She told the graduates of Baliwag Polytechnic College the importance of striving to earn the goals in life such as building a career, owning a car and having a family.
Santiago reminded the graduates not to tread on the path taken by some corrupt senators who have extra-marital affairs and steal government money.
Such topics have always been discussed by Santiago when the conversation leads to her nemesis, Senator Juan Ponce-Enrile.
Though she did not name Enrile, Santiago's description pointed to the veteran senator from Cagayan province.
"Hinamon ko na dati ng debate sa UP where I graduated, hindi pwede. Hinamon ko ng debate sa Plaza Miranda, hindi din pwede. Kaya hinamon ko na din ng suntukan," she said.
Santiago has repeatedly criticized Enrile for being the senator allegedly code-named "Tanda" by whistle-blowers in the pork scam. Enrile is one of three senators who allegedly pocketed billions of pesos of their Priority Development Assistance Fund.
