MANILA, Philippines - Defeated presidential candidate Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said he could not consider for now returning to government service, even as Ombudsman.
In a statement, the former lawmaker thanked Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago who recommended him for the position that will be vacated by Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez starting tomorrow, May 6.
“My present endeavors do not allow me to consider returning to government service at this time. I continue to do my share for my country in a private capacity, as every citizen should,” he said.
Nonetheless, “I am humbled by and am most grateful for the kind words [Santiago] said about me in recommending me to the vacant position of Ombudsman. My family and I are also grateful for her continued trust in me, particularly when she vouched for my integrity and competence,” Teodoro said.
Santiago said Teodoro should replace Gutierrez for his integrity and allegiance to the rule of law.
Santiago used to be his teacher in law school. Teodoro is the second cousin of President Benigno Aquino III. Aquino defeated Teodoro in the May 2010 presidential election.
