MANILA - Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz and Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla continue to enjoy the trust of President Benigno Aquino III amid recent disappointing figures from their offices.
Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. told radio dzRB that Aquino "remains confident" in the performances of the two Cabinet secretaries.
Baldoz was earlier criticized after the International Labor Organization reported that the Philippines had the highest unemployment rate among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
Based on the ILO’s Global Employment Trends, the Philippines registered an unemployment rate of 7.3% in 2013.
Brunei has 3.7 percent, Burma, 3.5 percent; Malaysia, 3.2 percent; Singapore, 3.1 percent, and Indonesia, 6 percent.
Asean neighbors with the lowest unemployment rates are Vietnam, 1.9 percent; Laos, 1.4 percent; Thailand, 0.8 percent; and Cambodia, 0.3 percent.
Meanwhile, Petilla also continues to receive criticisms from different stakeholders amid the increasing electricity rates.
Several energy stakeholders have earlier called on Petilla’s resignation.
Meanwhile, House Deputy Minority Leader Arnel Ty slammed the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) for supposedly rewarding its shareholders with P7.3-billion cash dividends amid the problem in the power rates.
"This is the height of callousness - for Meralco to be paying out even more cash bonuses to a few stockholders, while constantly jacking up electricity rates at the expense of 5.4 million consumers," Ty said.
Asked for comment, Coloma said it is the Energy Regulatory Commission’s task to monitor the actions of energy players.
