VP says he will handle the dispute between Pimentel, Zubiri
MANILA, Philippines - Despite protests from Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, former Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri will be in the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) line-up for the 2013 polls, Vice President Jejomar Binay said on Wednesday.
Pimentel has objected to the inclusion of Zubiri in the line-up, but Binay said both Mindanao politicians will be in the UNA ticket.
"Basta yung aming slate ay magkasama yung dalawang yun," Binay said on the sidelines of the ADB Board of Governors meeting. “Basta nakataya kami dyan, kami ang namumuno, we will handle it."
Binay said the two, whom he described as respected senators from Mindanao, have very high chances of winning the elections next year.
He said, “optimistic ako, yung dalawang yun mananalo."
Pimentel and Zubiri bitterly contested the last slot in the 2007 senatorial elections.
Zubiri won in the official count, but resigned from the Senate in August 2011 after several witnesses came out alleging poll fraud in Mindanao in favor of the administration candidates, which included Zubiri.
Pimentel, who had filed an electoral protest, was declared winner and assumed his seat in the Senate.
