MANILA -- Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said he would insist that alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles be invited back to the Senate, noting that it is in the interest of the public to know if she is worthy to be admitted as state witness.
Trillanes said having Napoles testify before the Senate on other lawmakers allegedly involved in the pork barrel scam would allow everyone to assess if she is telling the truth.
Napoles recently decided to tell all about the scam to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.
According to the senator, it would not be enough to rely only on Napoles' affidavit, saying it would be "unfair" to the lawmakers who would be implicated.
Trillanes said Napoles would be protected by the Senate as an institution as long she tells the truth.
"Nagsabi 'yung abogado niya na ayaw nilang humarap sa Senate, sa proper forum daw. Sa amin, hindi pupuwede 'yun kasi this is a political issue already aside from being a legal issue. Kailangang makita ng taumbayan e. Kung nag-aaply ka bilang state witness, kailangan makumbinse mo ang taumbayan na karapat-dapat ka maging state witness. And the only way to do that is magsabi ka ng totoo, nang buong katotohanan," Trillanes told reporters on Wednesday.
