MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago gave an unusual reason why she believes former President Joseph Estrada should run for mayor of Manila.
In an interview, Santiago said she has several strong reasons why she wants Estrada to spend his next few years in public office.
“He made his name as a public administrator, first as mayor of San Juan...plus it will spare Dr. Loi Estrada, his wife, of the problem of trying to determine where he is during office hours,” she told reporters.
The lawmaker said if she is still in the country, she will campaign for Estrada “because I believe that he is always the people’s choice.”
“I believe he is a sure fire winner if he decides to throw in his hat. And then you saw that he is physically fit anyway....He will become an excellent mayor because he knows the dynamics of politics because these are very hard to learn except through time,” she said.
Santiago is set to leave her post in the Senate after being elected judge of the International Criminal Court.
