BAGUIO CITY, Philippines - The Supreme Court has referred to the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) “for report and recommendation” a disbarment case filed against two members of President Benigno Aquino III’s Cabinet for allegedly criticizing Chief Justice Renato Corona prior to his impeachment trial.
In a press conference, SC spokesman and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez said the SC usually directs either the Office of the Bar Confidant or the IBP to handle cases against lawyers.
“This time, it decided to order IBP so that it can conduct an impartial (investigation). We all know that the Office of the Bar Confidant is under the SC," he said.
Lawyer Agustin Sundiam filed the disbarment case against Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima for uttering on nationwide television several statements in support of Aquino’s criticisms of Corona.
De Lima was quoted to have said that Corona is a “tyrant who holds himself above justice.”
