MANILA - President Benigno Aquino III has appealed for understanding following complaints over busted equipment at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1.
Penitence started early for those using Terminal 1 because of the lack of an effective air-con system. Passengers were also welcomed by long queues early this week after a computer glitch affected immigration processing.
Aquino made the rounds on Wednesday, checking the situation in ports and airport terminals. He did not go to Terminal 1, however.
Asked for his comment following complaints about Terminal 1, he said: “Humihingi tayo ng paumanhin at pasensiya pero talagang sa higpit ng mga patakaran sa gobyerno -- hindi ka naman puwedeng um-order ngayon at i-deliver within 30 days.”
Four new airconditioning units for Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) have been ordered but will arrive only in August.
Transport Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya had explained the air conditioning system is working, but said the ongoing rehabilitation works is causing poor air circulation and warm temperatures at the terminal.
The terminal 1 management of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said certain air handling units (AHUs) had to be shut off to prevent dust and particles from being sucked into the air conditioning system.
A safety net covering the departure hall’s ceiling was also blamed for the poor air circulation.
Aquino noted the new chillers were bidded out and awarded in November last year.
“Ngayon pinapatanong ko, bakit ganoon katagal? Alam ninyo sa gobyerno, kapag mayroon kang gustong bilhin, normally, apat na buwan mula sa in-order mo hanggang mai-deliver, pero inaabot ng siyam na buwan,” he said.
“So tinatanong ko, custom-made ba itong mga air con na ito, hindi off-the-shelf?”
He said he is still waiting for the feedback from airport officials.
