MANILA - Malacanang came to the defense of Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares who was criticized for reminding Manny Pacquiao of his tax deficiencies just a day after he regained his WBO welterweight belt.
In an interview on radio dzMM on Monday, Henares told Pacquiao to settle his previous tax deficiency, which has now ballooned to an estimated P2.6 billion due to interest.
"I don't think that she intends to be offensive. She's just doing her job. I don't think she meant to be a spoiler," Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said.
As Filipinos celebrated Pacquiao's victory on the Internet and social media, some netizens started bringing up Pacquiao's tax face-off with Henares, spawning a number of memes that have gone viral.
Valte, however, took these posts lightly.
"Perhaps, it was in the spirit of fun. We know how we can find humor in every situation," she said.
Valte also reiterated that Henares' mandate is to collect taxes, which is exactly what she is doing.
