MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III refused to comment yet on his uncle’s win in the Supreme Court, saying he has yet to study the decision and its impact on the government.
Aquino told reporters he has not yet read the decision on Tuesday that declared legal Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr.’s 20% stake in San Miguel Corporation (SMC).
He said he has already tasked his legal team to give him a briefer on the matter.
“I just want to get the clearest picture of what transpired and what the appropriate courses of action would be, depending on the recommendations of the legal counsels that I have employed. At the end of the day, syempre dapat ang interes ng nakakarami, ano ba ang tama ang dapat natin pairalin," Aquino said.
The stake is being contested by different farmer groups, which said the money used for the purchase of the shares was ill-gotten.
In a 73-page decision penned by Associate Justice Lucas Bersamin, the high court quashed the petition filed by the government through the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) - a special body created by the late President Corazon Aquino to recover ill-gotten wealth accumulated during the 21-year regime of former President Ferdinand Marcos.
