HIROSHIMA - Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida met Friday with his Filipino counterpart Albert del Rosario, with the two likely to have discussed strengthening bilateral maritime security ties.

The foreign ministers met on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting on nuclear disarmament held in the western Japan city of Hiroshima.

Maritime security cooperation has become a priority for Japan and the Philippines amid their territorial disputes with China.

Tokyo and Beijing remain at odds over Japanese-controlled islets in the East China Sea, while the Philippines and China are involved in a dispute over the sovereignty of several groups of shoals and atolls in the South China Sea.
