MANILA, Philippines -- Two of the more than 50 K-9 aviation dogs failed the the first standardization test conducted by the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC).

The K-9 dogs are undergoing bomb sniffing evaluation before they are deployed in ports, maritime aviation and land terminals all over the country.

The evaluation test required the K-9 units to pin point among 30 containers 6 pails which contained bombs. Two dogs failed the test.

Master Evaluator Churchill Gomez said that if the dogs passed the first test, they will still have to undergo a second level of evaluation.

“Ito pong testing natin Level 1 pa lang iyan... mas mahirap pa ang Level 2 na sa ilalim ng iba’t ibang vehicle [ang bomba],” said Gomez.

If the dogs successfully hurdle the tests, they will be inserted with accreditation chips, which will serve as identifying marks indicating that they passed the evaluation together with their handlers.
