MANILA, Philippines - Diego Castro, son of the late broadcast journalist Angelo Castro Jr., said his father's last moments were "very beautiful" and "very peaceful."

The veteran news anchor of "The World Tonight" passed away on Thursday at the St. Luke's Medical Center, surrounded by his family, including wife June Keithley and Diego.

"It was very beautiful, We were all beside him. We saw him through it. I must say it was very peaceful," he told ANC.

He added his father, who suffered from lung cancer, was not in pain.

However, his illness made it difficult for him to speak. Diego revealed his father, who was known for his deep baritone voice, "basically said his last words through writing,"

"He would talk to us through writing. It's lung cancer, so he had a tough time talking. But if he had messages, he would write it down. His last words were, from the way I understood it - let me go. He was telling us to let him go," Diego said.

Angelo was hospitalized for around 3 months, but Diego noted his father's mind was still "as sharp as ever."

One of his last requests was to have orange twin popsicles.

"He still had his requests, like orange twin popsies. It had to be orange, not chocolate, otherwise he would not eat it. That was last night. His mind was still very sharp," he said.

Diego also shared that his mother June, who is also suffering from cancer, held Angelo's hand throughout his last moments.

"They said their goodbyes, I love yous. She held his hand throughout the episode today. Hopefully she'll do okay. She's in the hospital right now," he said.

Diego said his father was "the ultimate perfectionist."

"I had to speak well. I had to modulate. I had to dress well. I had to look as handsome as he looked," he said.

Angelo's remains will be cremated on Friday. There are plans for a wake at the Castro family home starting tomorrow until Tuesday or Wednesday.
