MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang has sent its number one opponent, former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, an advance birthday greeting.

In a press conference in Malacañang, deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte told Arroyo: "Advance happy birthday and get well soon. I hope that she feels…that her condition continues to improve as it has been in the past few months."

Prosecutors earlier sought to transfer Arroyo to a regular detention facility for charges of electoral sabotage.

Doctors at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center, however, said she needs to undergo further therapy.

Arroyo will turn 65 on April 5, Thursday. A mass was held at the VMMC today.

In a message, Arroyo said: “It is my fervent hope that we will be truly united in the pursuit of long lasting happiness and prosperity. Let us pray so hard that wounds will be healed soon, with faith and resolve to help one another and move as a nation towards a brighter future.”

Meaningful Holy Week for GMA, CJ

Asked for a Holy Week message for Arroyo and Chief Justice Renato Corona, Valte said: “Sana ay maging makabuluhan ang kanilang Semana Santa....Repentance or confession is a personal decision. We will leave it to them."

Malacañang earlier imposed a gag rule on its officials regarding the ongoing impeachment trial of Corona.

The articles of impeachment  alleges that Corona tried to help Arroyo flee the country and escape criminal prosecution. – from a report by Jing Castañeda, ABS-CBN News
