44,532 local candidates running
MANILA, Philippines - The official campaign season for candidates running in local elections begins, today, Good Friday, but with a caveat.
They can only start their campaign tomorrow, Black Saturday, and were barred from doing so on Good Friday and Holy Thursday in observance of Holy Week.
The campaigns of the 44,532 local candidates running nationwide will also be under close scrutiny of the Commission on Elections, according to Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr.
"We expect more violations when local campaign season begins," he told ANC in an interview Wednesday night.
The local candidates will vie for more than 18,000 positions in the lower House, regions, provinces, cities, and towns.
A total of 891 local posititions are up for grabs in Metro Manila, while voters in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will choose 4,170 local officials.
Voters nationwide, meanwhile, will pick 640 congressmen, 3,909 mayors, 210 regional and provincial governors, 29,822 municipal councilors, as well as povincial board members, vice-mayors, vice-governors, and city councilors.
