MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Francis Escudero admitted Thursday the 2013 mid-term elections may influence senator-judges in their decision in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

"Kaplastikan sabihing hindi -- dun pumapasok puso at isip," he told ANC.

Senator-judge Miriam Defensor Santiago earlier said the coming 2013 elections should be blamed for the delays and confusion in the impeachment trial.

“Every senatoriable is eager to spout pious nonsense about impeachment, just to get free media advertising ahead of the campaign.  In pragmatic terms, the vote of every senator running for reelection will depend on how much weight he or she will give to two opposing factors," she said.

Escudero said it is still too early for them to decide on the matter since the defense has yet to complete its presentation of witnesses and evidence.

Corona was impeached by the House of Representatives ub December last year for allegedly failing to declare his true wealth and for showing bias for former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The impeachment trial, which began on January 16, is on a break and will resume on May 7. Report from ANC
