MANILA - A spokesman of former first gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo believes the recent string of visitors of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) only proves that she is a "victim of political persecution."
In a statement, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio said the continuous visits to Arroyo reveal "an emerging consensus among opinion-makers that the former President is but a victim of political persecution by the present administration."
Among those who have visited Arroyo at the hospital were former Presidents Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada, former Vice President Noli de Castro and former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
High-ranking religious leaders, the latest of which was El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde, have also visited the former president and now Pampanga representative.
"Judging from the number of people who are requesting to call on President Arroyo, and who have expressed their concern for her health and their belief in her innocence, it would appear that the only persons truly convinced that the cases against her are legitimate, are the automatons of Malacanang and their paid puppies, who have hypnotized themselves into believing their own propaganda," Topacio said.
The lawyer particularly thanked Velarde for "taking care" of Arroyo, upon the dying wish of Arroyo's mother, former First Lady Eva Macapagal.
"The prayer of Bro. Mike and his wife Sis. Belen for the health of Pres. Arroyo and for justice to prevail, is also deeply appreciated," he said.
Arroyo is currently detained at the VMMC on a plunder charge over the alleged misuse of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) funds.
