MANILA - President Aquino reiterated the need for disaster preparedness three months before the start of the rainy season.
Aquino spoke at the Philippine Quality Awards where two of the awardees were the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 9 and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
"The responsibilities of the government institutions being awarded today will also be increasing. At a time when natural disasters are becoming more frequent and destructive, it is much more vital for the DOST and the PIA to optimize the way they gather and disseminate information to our countrymen. The pressure on you to continue your good performance is intense, since your efficiency will be measured not just by your traditional metrics, but by the number of lives you do save," he said.
Aquino has been reminding public officials to prepare for the onset of the storm season. This, after intense criticism over his administration's handling of the effects of super typhoon Yolanda.
On Tuesday, he asked that local officials prepare for the storm season. He reiterated his appeal in an ambush interview on Wednesday.
The Philippine Quality Awards was institutionalized by Republic Act 9013 to encourage and engage public and private organizations and other stakeholders to strive for and attain performance excellence.
This year, the award was given to the following for their commitment to quality management: Lyceum of the Philippines University Manila, Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation, Zamboanga Polymedic Hospital, DOST Region 9 and the PIA.
